Dropped by the Museum for a long overdo check on the Hurricane IV project. The work continues on. The hull frame is getting closer to being finished. Still lots of little details to take care of. The frames still need to be sealed up and finished before the deck covering can start. Decking materials have been ordered.

I have been missing in action the last few weeks, with an Achilles tendon that ruptured, an activity I can not recommend. The boys have been busy skinning the bottom, Laminating pieces for the nose and working on construction of the right sponson. Here are a few quick pictures I grabbed. Well it been quite some time since I last made it in. A new job has me maxed out of time and energy. Here are a few photos showing the state of the beast... I hear Roger is concentrating on Dr. Kens U-25 for the next few weeks. So progress will slow in May.

We joined the replacement longitudinal. The engine boys did a little testing of the Oberto... We have a little more work to finish up the engine stringers and outboard longitudinals. One more stringer side to laminate plywood to, and then add the aluminum to both insides. Then its back to frames......

We worked on laminating one of the engine stringers and both longitudinals, repairing a crack in one and replacing the section burned in the fire on the other. Pete took in Rogers number 8 Slo-Mo book.

We worked out a system to quickly plug the holes in the engine stringers. Many hands make light work... A pizza delivery snafu had us looking over Pete's shoulder at just a small part of Rogers Slo-Mo memorabilia. We knew the second we mixed up west system for laminating the stringers, the pizza would be delivered. We took in book seven of ten.....

Roger and crew have progressed forward in my absence. The frame count must be in the high teens. Lots more materials are on hand, more sheets of plywood for frames and some funky half-rounds that are to be used for deck stringers. Tonight I worked on the engine stringers. With all the holes in them it was decided to drill them out and dowel them. The sides of the stringers in the area of the engine compartment needed to be sanded. This will allow for better adhesion when plywood is sandwiched to the outboard sides and aluminum to the inboard. Most of the burnt sections of the boat have been removed, and it makes for a strange sight.

I came by the museum for a meeting and had a few minutes to check on progress, but not enough to jump in and play. Progress continues on all fronts. The Hurricane is gaining new wood almost daily and what was once a warehouse is now a Museum, and everybody loves it when the motor boys start making noise.

I came in early today to check what happens at the museum during the day, besides I had the day off and had to baby sit in the evening.... More activity then you would think. Cut some small oak pieces to attach to the plywood frames. I removed a deck brace that also needs to be attached to the frame. Much to my surprise it was not oak, but appeared to be maybe spruce? That stalled my progress without being able to confer with the Czar. Lots of cleaning up an organization to do. When they store three other boats in the back the space gets a wee tight.

Work continues on in replacement of the frames and transom. It seemed like a large pile of oak, but I know at this rate we will quickly reduce it into frames and sawdust. Work also continues on streamlining and organizing the facility. The countertops are being sealed and containers ordered for organizing the cabinets. It’s starting to look more like a boat shop and less like a warehouse.

I jumped into removing and replacing frames. I started with a larger frame (#10) to help to best utilize the replacement plywood. Frame ten had a extra doubler and proved to be a time consuming removal. It looks like the others generally will not be so tough. It's amazing how quickly the time goes.

Last Thursday we rounded the bend as the first pieces of wood were added. Work is starting at the transom and moving forward. A truely impressive pile of oak has been obtained. We need to clear the decks and make space to work as progress on. We are getting to the fun stuff.

It didn’t take very long to remove the skinning from the bottom. The job was almost complete when we left Thursday night. Only a small section of the forward tunnel was left to do. Without the skin it is very easy to twist the frame around. We will have to be careful to keep from putting a twist in things, as we start to piece things back together.

Tons of screws need to be removed from the bottom, to allow for disassembly. I worked briskly for two hours just on the right sponson and could not get to them all. Most in that area where easily removed. Other areas of the bottom required more effort. Cabinets are still being installed.

Well try as I might I missed the Hurricane being turned over. It looks as if the deed was done on Thursday night. Work has already been started removing the duraluminum and bottom. On Saturday, I only was able to stop by the museum and take a look and a few photos. The great news is a crew was well under way installing the new cabinetry. I am looking forward to seeing the result and organizing and filling the cabinets.

More housekeeping than boat restoration tonight. The boys from the motor shop where sorting and finding storage space for quite a few pallets of engine parts. Most of it being 21 pretty much trashed crankshafts. Maybe a new mailbox post in my future? That's what our man Peter thought they would be good for. Roger should be in on Thursday, the rumored date of turning the hurricane over. As soon as it over we will have plenty of work to do.

We offer our condolences to our crew chief Roger and his family, who's wife Marti passed away suddenly on December 1st. She was a great supporter of boatracing. She will be missed.

I didn't get a chance to come in last week with Thanksgiving and all. The project now is at a wait and hurry up stage. The fixture to help turn the hull over arrived and was being installed as I left. We now need the help of the fork lift, which happen to be in pieces in the middle of the engine shop. I will assume that it will be put back together and the the hull will be turned over on Thursday. I continued to organize tools and make space to work. Word has it that the benches and cabinets are just a few weeks away. I would be great to get them in before the new year.
